Ok, an opportunity has arisen and I’m trying to weigh out all the options.

So here’s my question, is there a place I could quickly determine which car would cost more on insurance? Or do you guys have a decent idea without having to pester my insurance agent just yet?

2 cars in question:

Current car: 2012 C250 Coupe with 26,500 miles

Prospect vehicle: (New) 2015 Chevy Camaro RS Coupe V6 with no miles

Yes we all know this is strange talking about getting a muscle car with a V6 and trading out of a Mercedes for a Chevy, but warranty is almost up on the C250 and this would be the same payment or cheaper on a brand new car with a brand new warranty included. Also, I’ve been learning more about the history of the C250 that I’m not exactly a fan of (i.e. There was a crappy repaint done that just started showing as bad) So I’m just trying to learn as much as I can to make an informed decision. Besides same or lower payment on new car with full warranty is hard to ignore without at least weighing the options.

Thanks in advance guys!

I figured, but trying to avoid the hassle if I at least had an idea which one was going to cost more.

There was a time, if a car had a tubo it had a higher rate than an eaqul car without one. The rules are convoluted. Ask your insuer if they have a list.

I’d guess the Camaro would be cheaper on insurance, but maybe not.

Just call and ask.

I know it’s an odd question, just trying not to be a burden for what's most likely not going to happen.

Call your insurance person. You’re not bothering them at all. Unless you want to post a ton of personal information, we couldn't even ballpark it for you.

Don’t feel bad about bothering them. That’s their job.

You spent more time crafting this post than it would take to call your insurance company and ask for a quote. Hell, my insurance allows me to put a VIN or model into their website and it will give me the exact price. Have you checked if that’s available? Any answer anyone gives on here is complete guestimation.

“Get a quote In 7 mins or less” Esurance. Compare both cars there, whichever is cheaper there, will be cheaper with your insurance carrier.

Don’t be surprised when they call and email you every 3 days.

Have the VIN numbers. It will make their job easier.

Fair enough, but my insurance is a local one and no special websites that I know of. I'll just call them tomorrow with the vin

I do not think you realize, not all insurance companies will provide quotes, even with a VIN.

I can answer a question you didn’t ask, if that helps :)

The M271 and M271evo engines are not known to be the... **cough** ahem... most reliable engines Mercedes has ever produced. Top issues being high and low pressure fuel pumps, timing chains, and camshaft adjusters. I’ve seen quite a few of each of those under warranty, and there aren’t a ton of them (evos anyway, which you have) over 50k miles yet. But to put it simply, I don’t expect those engines to have 123 diesel levels of reliability or life expectancy. Which is unfortunate because 204's are very reliable otherwise, especially the facelifted ones.

You’re right, I didn’t, but sounds like his might and he hasn’t called yet.

So what do you do, just buy a car without knowing if insurance is ridiculous? Why would you insure with this surprise pricing insurance?

The Camero should be cheaper in most cases. Also thank you for showing some V6 muscle car love. I drove the Camaro on a road trip in January in V6 spec and I can say it’s more than enough for most enthusiast drivers and get’s enough MPG. Unless you’re very track friendly and have a ton of talent you’re not going to out drive the car. I allegedly had it at it’s limit on a public road full of very tight twisties and was able to put shame to mutliple M3's and other higher spec cars.

Thanks I appreciate it. Would that have something to do with it feeling low on power sporadically or it feeling like it has a little trouble running smooth on startup overnight?

It’s fun to acknowledge that these have more power than the early 2000's V8s and much better economy to boot!

Yup! and in most cases chassis >power. I’d take an FRS > Hellcat if I’m doing twisties or even on a track if I were a beginner trying to learn how to race/performance driving.

Most definitely. If you’re still under warranty go get it checked out.

You can get a quote from most insurance companies online without any obligations. Calling will give you a much closer number to expect though.

You may run into a bit higher insurance because two door vs four door though (depends on the company). State Farm used to consider any two door car a sports coupe (regardless of the make/model). Not sure if they’ve changed that, or if other companies share similar beliefs, but my SL and my Magnum are insured for about the same rate, while the Magnum has comprehensive+liability only and the SL is full coverage. Not sure how they came up with their numbers, but I don’t ask out of fear it would go up.

Ok can do, it just doesn't seem predictable nor does it throw codes so I had just chalked it up to me being paranoid.

I have tried all day to call my rep. I don’t know if they’re out of the office today or what but this is annoying. And honestly, that’s how I am with insurance agencies. I feel their numbers are just a bunch of hocus pocus and if you ask about clarification on them, they go up lol.

Lack of a CEL didn’t mean there aren’t any codes. At least get a record of complaint at the dealer and have them look into it. Common enough problem really.

Well I just posted a new post on Oppo, think you could take a look and offer up some thoughts. I'll most definitely be contacting them after the drive home.
